Los tiempos formales del modo subjuntivo expresan hipótesis, deseo, acción irreal o imaginaria. La referencia a un tiempo irreal supone que el encuadramiento temporal de la acción no es tan claro como en el modo indicativo.
En la formación de las expresiones de subjuntivo se utilizan las mismas formas que para los tiempos de indicativo.

Residualmente, existen unas formas propias del subjuntivo que quedan restringidas a expresiones formales, literarias o idiomáticas, más frecuentes en inglés americano.
Las formas negativas (propias) del presente de subjuntivo se construyen con not en vez de utilizar el verbo to do (do not, don't, does not, doesn't).

Las formas propias del subjuntivo se usan en:

Al traducir de inglés a español se realiza con facilidad la conversión del subjuntivo inglés al español. Pero cuando se pretende lo contrario, esto es, transformar el subjuntivo español en una expresión equivalente en inglés, resulta bastante complicado. En general, hay que destacar que el subjuntivo español es difícil de traducir dado que no hay unos tiempos correspondientes en inglés.
Para expresar acción irreal (hipótesis, deseo, mandato) equivalentes al subjuntivo español, en inglés se emplean casi en exclusiva los tiempos apropiados del modo indicativo o bien construcciones con algunos verbos modales.
Los tiempos formales (propios) del subjuntivo inglés tienen un uso marginal en la actualidad.
La traducción más frecuente de un tiempo irreal, como es el subjuntivo, se realiza mediante las estructuras que se detallan en los apartados siguientes.
